Thumbs up Sinkie Film Wins Against Foreign Films Over CNY Period

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

This is what PAP wants of sinkies - be open to foreign competition and beat them! That's how Singapore can always punch above its weight!

Quote:
SINGAPORE: Local director Jack Neo’s new film Ah Boys To Men 3: Frogmen (ABTM 3) raked in a total of S$2.83 million since its opening on Feb 19, the film’s co-distributor Golden Village Pictures said on Monday (Feb 23).

This makes ABTM 3 the Asian film with the highest ever box office takings in its opening weekend in Singapore.

ABTM 3, a film about a group of young recruits in Singapore’s elite Naval Diving Unit which stars Tosh Zhang, Wang Weiliang, Joshua Tan and Maxi Lim, handily beat its closest rivals Kung Fu Hustle (S$1.90 million), and Ip Man 2 (S$1.73 million) in terms of opening weekend box office takings.

The first two films in the series, army-themed Ah Boys To Men 2 and Ah Boys to Men 1, took in S$1.51 million and S$1.50 million respectively in their opening weekend.

Jackie Chan’s big-budget epic Dragon Blade, which opened on the same day as ABTM 3, took in S$1.48 million in its opening weekend.

“It is definitely a great assurance for the team to know that the movie managed to top the chart amidst the tough and competitive (Chinese New Year) environment this year. With everyone’s support, we defended our turf and this is a victory for the local movie industry! Hooya!” said Neo in a media release on Monday (Feb 23).

The director had previously said during a media conference for the film that he may shoot a sequel to ABTM 3 if the film’s box office result was satisfactory.
