One person has died after a stabbing in central Auckland today.

A St John spokeswoman said paramedics attended the incident at 12.22pm and two patients were taken to Auckland Hospital.
One was in a critical condition and another in a serious condition.

Police Northern Communications Centre Inspector Kerry Watson said one of those people had now died and a third person was in police custody.

"No other persons are being sought in relation to this incident," he said.

"Criminal investigators and specialist staff are making their way to the scene."

TVNZ's One News reported the fatal stabbing happened at an international school where the woman victim, in her early 20s, was sitting an exam.

The alleged offender was the victim's husband who had flown into the country from India, One News reported.

One witness, Joe Johar, told the programme that people were screaming.

"I see a guy who got stabbed in his neck and he was bleeding badly."

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman told One News said police were dealing with a lot of people at the scene.

"We're dealing with quite a lot of people in the building, there's a lot of people outside of the building - we're trying to establish what's actually gone on and who's played what role in the incident."
