SINGAPORE: Quah Kim Swee, a former international striker for Singapore and one of the famous Quah siblings, died on Saturday (Jul 18) aged 76 after a long battle with illness.
The ace striker was part of the Singapore team from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, and was known for his fearless flying headers, one of which left him with a scar on his forehead.
In the 1963 Malaya Cup, Kim Swee scored six goals in Singapore's 11-0 crushing defeat of Pahang. He went on to lead Singapore to a fourth-place finish in the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok – the country’s best football showing in the Asian Games. The Lions were pipped to the bronze medal by Japan 2-0.
Ten out of the 11 Quah siblings represented Singapore in sports. Kim Swee – together with brothers Kim Beng, Kim Choon, Kim Siak, Kim Lye and Kim Song – played football on the national team. Sisters Theresa, Doreen and Rosa played for the national women’s team. Youngest brother Kim Tiong represented the country in track and field.
