SINGAPORE: At least four horses at the Singapore Turf Club (STC) have tested positive for a non-fatal respiratory disease and have been quarantined, STC said in a news release on Wednesday (Jan 20).

The four horses were quarantined immediately after testing positive for Streptococcus equi, also known as Strangles, while another four horses with possible clinical signs have also been identified and quarantined, STC said.

Due to the contagious nature of the disease, a total of 128 horses that were housed in the affected stables have been quarantined and barred from the track following isolation orders by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), said the racecourse operator.

Strangles can be spread through the horses’ saliva, body fluids and through contaminated clothing and gear. It is however easily treated in horses and cannot be contracted by humans, STC added.

"STC is presently working with AVA on isolation procedures to ensure that the health and well-being of horses under isolation are given the utmost priority as well as to minimise disruption to racing," it said in the release.

The club added that racing would otherwise "continue as per normal".
