I couldn't agree more with you for the fact that cost of living is indeed much lower or would I say it's easier to control oneself living cost here in Shanghai being that varities & ranges of food, dwelling cost are all very diversify, not simply affordable but can be managed at a different level to it's cost.

Cab fare hikes kick in, some commuters to turn to MRT or buses

New fares for ComfortDelgro taxis kicked in on Monday.
During peak hours in the morning, a taxi commuter can clock up charges of as much as $8 even before the cab moves away from the curb.

First, $4 for the morning rush-hour booking fee, which kicks off half an hour early now, at 7am.

And then, there is the peak period surcharge, which is now $2 instead of $1 previously.

Adding to the $6 is the flag-down fare of $2.50 - 10 cents more than the previous $2.40.

Tallying up, just getting into a taxi can set a commuter back by about $8.50.

On the road, every 10 cents now covers a shorter distance.

Compared to the old taxi fares, a commuter now has to pay about 20% more for a 10-kilometre ride

You can go to the following areas to shop for your office attire/clothes;

1) Huai Hai Zhong Rd, junction Huang Pi Rd. Pacific Dept Store (Tai Ping Yang Dept Store). Similar to our old time Metro Dept Store, with lots of merchandise to shop for ranging from ladies to men's wear, household to beddings, etc....you name it, they have it. Respectable Dept store, no cheating would occur.

2) Huai Hai Zhong Rd, junction of Shan Xi Rd. Parkson Dept Store (the same Malaysian owned store). Everything is similar to above Tai Ping Yang Dept store as mentioned.

Since it's your vrgin trip, advise you NOT to go to individual shops along Shan Xi Rd, Mao Ming Rd, etc.....need alot of haggling skills in term shopping at little shops like these, even though one might find gem sometimes in such shops or places.

and yes, if you go to the 5th or 6th floor of that parkson, there is a restaurant that serves frog claypot poriddge Geylang style. Check it out if you miss home. The rest of their dishes are less than stellar.

If you need suits or cashmere coats, I suggest you get them tailored.
The famous Dong Jia Du is closed I think. I heard talk of them moving to Xizhang Lu and Guoqing Lu. I have yet to confirm. I have a tailor that a bunch of us singaporeans go to a lot. reasonable prices. PM me if you need this contact

V-one and Giodarno seems really decent with good pricing. Many stores there so walk around. You can try Raffles city also off people's square. Or the two bro SHASGP69 suggested. All good choices.

Totally agree with you bro Luvgangsta on the info herein.
Shanghai is a metropolitan city, so much so when one shop at resppectable, well established big scale malls he/she would still be treated fairly and not being cheated.

Most cheating cases occur at small established shops, along streets, i.e. Maoming Rd, Shan Xi Rd. As I mentioned earlier, patronising such small shops, needs lots of haggling and bargaining skills. Not suitable for newbies or the weak-hearted ones.

As I worked in Gateway Building, I would recommended coming here to shop as mentioned by Bro Luvgangsta, being it's a larger scale mall than many others, well organised, most of all, with lots of selections & varities in brands and styles.............

If you are looking for the same kind of fun, you can try 7m (I haven't been there myself though). I also suggest Golden Globe star chain of KTVs (3 stores). Number 4 shop is coming up and Number 5 is in negotiation. If you go on weekends the bill will come out cheaper than HS KTV (50% off all drinks and food). I have membership so I get that treatment everyday. I can also intro you to a manager there who will take care of you. Doesn't it sound like Shanghai? Property prices are sky-rocketing in China and the average commoners are complaining its affordability and the Chinese government has to announce some measures recently to make housing affordable to the lower end income spectrum.

I was contemplating to buy a newly developed 3-bedroom apartment from Vanke Development but at the price of RMB13,000 per square metre, the price is almost similar to a HDB flat.

Anyway I don't have enough cash for the 30% downpayment and I can't use my CPF savings so I have to give up the idea...

Order food and damn, it took them so long for a bowl of dumplings. Waited for more than half an hour. Decided to leave the place w/o food. SAD.... but maybe I m unlucky, cos I went in at the wrong time. Total hours spent there : about 3hrs... waiting time half of it. Overall the place is good but I think the VIP rooms will be good lor.

Coming from Xu Jia Hui directions along Wu Zhong Rd, pass the junction of Jin Hui Rd bro......on the left hand side of the road. You will see the famous Taiwanese steamboat restaurant, Guo Bi Peng Da.......same location, just next to the steamboat restaurant is the Tian Long HC lah! Parking space is available right infornt of the HC, oepn-air space, very convenient for those bros who drives there. But park at places not so obvious la incase someone close to family sees you lor....;)

Bro, nothing comes free in Shanghai. Even when there is free, you queue number is somewhere next to never than anywhere else. If you been to the night scenes in Singapore then I wonder what makes it so different here. The pubs, clubs are crawling with partygoers as usual, nothing special really. If you're good at just chit-chatting, equip yourself with some interesting life-stories or humour. If you don't know what your forte is, then just pick up some simple magic tricks (at Metro Town or Raffles City).
4) Be PATIENT. Don't behave like a lecher or a desperado. Chances are, a woman will be attracted to your inner beauty (knowledge, charisma, talent) first before she starts to reciprocrate. If the first encounter is fruitless, then you ask yourself if it's worth to pursue. If no, change target. If yes, invite her out again (after a few days - give her some break) and work on it.

Here's are some tips to reduce your expenses:
1) Tell her because you're a foreigner, you're not used to eating Chinese or exotic food so suggest to meet in a fast food restaurant instead.
2) If she suggests going window shopping after eating, be on your guard. Chances are, she'll hint or tell you what she fancies to gauge your reaction (if you buy for her, you passed her test, else you failed). My solution: tell her I gotta go (think of some reasonable excuse).
3) If she orders expensive alcoholic drinks, tell her you're a non-alcoholic. Chances are, she wants to drink with you but since you told her you're a non-alcoholic, she'll probably drop the idea.
4) If you decide she's not your type and she asks you to send her home, tell her it's out of the way or you have another appointment.
5) If you decide you had enough of her and want to end the relationship, tell her you're leaving Shanghai for good (or think of other reasonable excuse).
6) Get another mobile number to be used specially for ONS pursuits. In case you want to end the relationship and she's the sticky type who doesn't let go, you can simply change another mobile number without affecting your personal life.

Remember: when you meet women over the internet for the first time, use your judgement to gauge if she's the type for you and if she's genuinely not after your money. Most likely, she'd want to get to know you better (as a friend) and be comfortable with you before getting physical with you. Advice for next time.

1. Do not ask what services they have. You do that, they know you are not local.

2. Only tell them 敲小背 "qiao xiao bei" if you want HJ, 敲大背 "qiao da bei" if you want FS. Any questions like "What services you have?" will signal that you are a foreigner.

I was new to the company then. At the time, my company oso juz bought over another company, So the staffs are in the midst of combining & re-structuring. Next day, she sms-ed me, saying she wanna be my gf (can co-habitat 2gether after some time). I replied, no, I prefer to focus on my career 1st, the rest, will think of it later. Few days later, the evening b4 I fly off 2 another city for project, she asked me out for some light drinks at riverside at PuDong. End of the nite, we were in the same direction, so I thought I'll send her home. Then she suddenly said she wanted to go my house. Ok, fine, let's go then. Needless to say, in my apartment, I had a great time with her.

That time, I know I shouldnt be that close with a colleague. I dun believe in office romance. But since I'm going to another city for several months, I think it may not be so bad. If news or rumours of this spread around, that's it for me! After some time, I found out that she was actually the "personal secretary" of 1 of the VPs, from the company that we juz bought over!!! I then remembered I saw ATM & credit cards in her wallet, belonging to that VP!!! She even used to stay in that VP's apartment!!!

I was goddamn worried, dunno if the beans will be spilt or not. The news of that unpleasant incident during our first dinner had already spread throughout all of Shanghai colleagues, Pudong + Puxi, dunno about the damage in Beijing, GuangZhou & Shenzhen. I was oso worried wat's gonna happen to me, etc. I really regretted that.

Whether the beans were spilt anot, I dunno, but as rumours goes, many colleagues were juz teasing that we dated. I was really lucky, that VP left the company before me.

Thinking back, I could have juz paid for sex, then I dun have to go through all the worries & imagination about wat's gonna happen, etc. Pay, fire & forget. Have peace of mind, no worries.

Then another gal in Hubei, I got her from a KTV. The first time, she didnt talk about $$. But I insisted on giving her $$, saying that she oso need to eat & pay bills. She juz said for those past few days, we had been paying for all the parties, dinner, drinks, etc. I am after a man, and has sexual needs, etc etc. The next day, I put 300 RMB into her bag. When she found out after I left, she called me & scolded me badly. She said I made her feel like it's a transaction, that she's like a prostitute.

Subsequently, she suggested that each nite I want her, she wont go to work in the KTV but be wif me. I will pay her the tips of 100 RMB for the evening, for the loss of income in the KTV. Each person in our gang had a local gal as as gf then. We all "bao' these gals. Only mine was abit exception, where she still goes back to the KTV to work, while my colleagues' gals dun. I knew the 100 RMB a nite is only juz a formality, it's as good as not giving. Otherwise, she was afraid I wouldnt call her. She oso dun bother to take from me, but I auto give her everytime, sometimes, more than 100 RMB. After several months, she said she wanted to be my gf, and hope that 1 day, it is possible for us to be married!!! I really fret. Luckily, I was sent to another project before we get too detailed into that discussion. I had already left the city, and she mentioned this on the phone.

So brudders, u wont know the agenda behind many of them. They have all sorts of things in their minds, many of us cant even imagine! If u tink I got a good deal with 100 RMB a nite, I oredi knew rite from the beginning it's not so simple. It's almost as good as free. Only thing is, there is really some $$ involved, so I can still argue that it is still a transaction, that was the agreed price.

If I am not sent away on projects, the gals may well create a scene in the offices (mine & clients'). I wont wanna imagine the consequences.

Thank you for the kind words. We are all here to share our own experience, be it happy or sad ones. Through these postings, all of us wish sincerely to be able to learn from each other, so am I.

I benefit from being an old man, who exhibits, naturally a matured look and a caring attitude towards younger generation. As I have said many times, I did not do anything special for my GF, just some money to her once in a while, the amount of which depends on how convenient is my wallet. I treat her with respect and care. When I pass her money, it was always with humble attitude making sure that she understands the money is for her monthly expenses, and not the services she provide, such as washing my clothes, buying or cooking meals for me, companionship in bed, etc. I remember when I first knew her, once I called her to meet me in Shanghai, she told me that she was having her period.
