I think the SG boss must be squeezing his balls for letting his thai partner to have the Siam Square branch, I heard from my friend there's another one in Sukhumvit which he's in charge of but the branch is apparently not doing better than the Siam Square one.

Bakeries battle for market share : Rising popularity of coffee-flavoured buns

As the fad for coffee and green tea fades, coffee-flavoured buns from Singapore and Malaysia are gaining in popularity.

Seven brands from Thailand's neighbours have been launched in the last three months: Crystal Jade, My Bread, Bread Talk, Roti Boy, Mr Bun and Papa Roti. Roti Boy has become a local phenomenon.

Also jumping on the bandwagon is Coffee Dome, with hot-selling pastries from its first outlet on the ground floor of the Carrefour hypermarket's Rama IV branch.

Fast Freight and Forward Co was set up to run Coffee Dome outlets in Thailand with registered capital of two million baht.

The former chief operating officer of the Singaporean bakery brand Roti Mom is leading the venture with a group of Thai electronics and IT entrepreneurs.

Kelvin Goh, who is now marketing director of Fast Freight & Forward Co, said the company would initially import frozen dough from Singapore for processing in Thailand.

However, it plans to produce its own dough at a bakery in Chanthaburi starting next month.

Business is likely to be brisk for Coffee Dome. Since it opened, more than 3,500 buns have been snapped up each day _ and customers have no qualms about waiting in line for the snacks.

Following the positive response, the company plans to open between 40 and 50 more Coffee Dome outlets throughout the country, including Pattaya and Nakhon Ratchasima.

But if one can't wait, Coffee Dome products can also be found in some Carrefour, Tesco Lotus and Tesco Lotus Express outlets and at all outlets of The Mall department stores.

To increase customer satisfaction, the company also plans to offer a delivery service at some Tesco Lotus express outlets.

Asked whether the popularity of coffee-flavoured buns was just a fad, Mr Goh said: ''Although coffee and bread may not be every Thai's ideal way to start the day, the popularity of the two products has continuously increased.

''Our products are made from a combination of both, so demand for coffee buns is not just a fad.''

Apart from opening in the local market, the company plans to sell franchises in Japan, South Korea and the United States.

Also making a grab for a portion of the market is President Bakery Plc, the manufacturer of Farmhouse bread.

Managing director Apichart Thammanomai said the company was interested in expanding via retail channels to get closer to customers, rather than using a wholesale approach.

To cash in on market demand for fresh bakery goods, President Bakery opened its first Farmhouse Fresh outlet in the Asok area earlier this year.

Its approach to products is similar to Roti Boy's, but it claims its products are different and more varied.

The company plans to open five Farmhouse Fresh outlets in Bangkok this year.

Mr Apichart said the company would also expand its wholesale business in 2006 and it would relaunch its logo soon to reaffirm its brand image.

President says its business isn't threatened by the new market entries, and expects operations to grow this year by 18%, on par with 2005.

Sales of President Bakery last year increased 18.7% to 2.14 billion baht with a 42.2% increase in net profit to 191.49 million baht.

President Bakery shares closed on Friday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 89 baht, up four baht, in trade worth 535,000 baht.

Betagro branches out into Japanese restaurants

Agricultural group Betagro is aiming at 20% growth in consolidated sales this year driven by meat industry investments.

Of the targeted revenue of 30 billion baht, 12 billion would come from the group's chicken business, 14 billion from its regional and feed businesses, three billion from swine and two billion from animal health, said Vasit Taepaisitphongse, the executive vice-president.

Mr Vasit said more sales would come from its new chicken processing plant, which has increased its total capacity to 4,000 tonnes of processed chicken a month, from 1,600 tonnes previously.

Additionally, he said, total output from its animal-feed unit would grow to 1.5 million tonnes a year, up from 1.2 million.

The group also planned to expand its processed-meat business for the export market, which included sausages, bacon and ham, he said.

He said the company hadn't been affected much by the bird flu outbreak that had hit many farms in Asia and Europe.

"There is a bright opportunity for Thai chicken exports, backed by quality that has been trusted by customers in Japan and Europe," he said.

Mr Vasit said the group still had close business ties with its Japanese partners, Ajinomoto and Sumitomo.

Betagro plans to introduce more cooked products, including ready-to-eat meals, with a focus on a new joint venture with the Japanese restaurant chain, Ootoya, to tap the popularity of Japanese food.

Betagro Ootoya Co is a joint venture between Betagro, Ootoya Inc and Sumitomo Corp Thailand, set up last year to start a chain of restaurants to serve Japanese dishes prepared in a homemade style.

According to Mr Vasit, Betagro Ootoya expected to gain in popularity with plans to open 30 additional outlets in Bangkok.

Ootoya operates three types of outlets in Thailand - Ootoya Restaurant, Ootoya Kitchens and Ootoya Deli.

Following good response to its Thong Lo branch, opened last January, Mr Vasit said the company would open 10 additional outlets by the end of the year with investment of up to 50 million baht.

Of the 10 new outlets, three would be restaurants, four would be kitchens and the rest would be delis.

This year, Mr Vasit expected the company's six outlets to generate between 140 million and 150 million baht in sales.

The Ootoya chain, which was established in +++yo in 1958, has 170 outlets in +++yo and Kansai in Japan.

The Thai outlets import raw materials such as fish, sauces and seaweed, from Japan. The price of each dish ranges from 100 to 200 baht.

Ootoya in Bangkok targets working people, families and students, said Mr Vasit.

Mr Vasit said the restaurant business was a new challenge for Betagro but it had provided valuable experience in food business supply chains and an opportunity to interact directly with consumers.

Other international chains had approached Betagro to discuss setting up similar joint ventures, he said.

Food so-so, not cheap -but watch out for over-zealous "hands out" for tipping by captain/manager (only 3 of us, why must have 2 attending to us??). Even getting off your shoes b4 entering room, neve mind toilets. Accept tipping is a way of life LOS, but this 1 is OTT!

took a not too short walk from Wattana Mansions(Soi Poseidon)... according to legend, Somboon used to provide quality food at cheap prices until PM Japan Junichiro Koizumi visited the restuarant... soon after the prices sky rocketed..

the entire restaurant was plastered with pictures of that honouary visit save for the restrooms.

For 2persons., we ordered a chilli crab, a frog leg, a snake-something fish, a kangkong and a kung chay num pla....

Chilli Crab: 4.5/10

Their style of chilli crab is very different from singapore and din go down as well.. wanted to get black pepper crab originally but only avaliable for big sized crab @ >1,000B

Frog Leg: 7/10

Done in black pepper style. Was quite nice, again, in an unique thai way

Kang Kong: 5/10

think it only taste good sambal style. donno whether avaliable at Somboon or not

Fish: 6/10

Sticky skin

Kung Chay Num Pla: 8/10

think it is very difficult to go wrong with this dish. no cooking required. almost wolfed down the whole plate by myself

Total damage? 1,030B... not exactly cheap but not expensive either.. don't think you can get this type of price in singapore... although not fantastic fare... maybe i chosed all the wrong dishes...

Nathong is nice. Good food and reasonable price. I believe it is cater for the local. Huge place with a stage in the pond(With singers). Always one of the place for dinner for my bkk trip. Only problem is that not all taxi know how to go there. Have to tell them it is opposite carribean G club.:D

I think the Tawandaeng u talking about is in Nawamin, not Sathorn. Probably there might oso be 1 in Sathorn. I'm not familiar & dun go Sathorn area. Nawamin & Sathorn are in opposite directions.

Thks for heads up. Last week, popped by spanking new Central World Plaza (ex World Trade Centre). Food court Loft on 7th flr (same style as Central Chitlom) not bad for fast food of asian menu kind. Not cheapest unlike MBK's or even Emporium's, but reasonable with great stylish ambience. Background music fit for conversation, nice seating with big glass view. Even showed to seating, and serve you with order (if kena wait). Inexpensive with your date. Not crowded 2X I was there.

It's beside Hway Khwang MRT. On the opposite side of the road of Caesar MP I think. Remember they only accept cash payment...

Just in case any of you guys want to eat good "Thai home-styled cooking" at affordable prices, one of my favourites is the "Samyen" market close to Chulalongkorn University.

It should be on most of the tourist maps.

The stalls are upstairs and they have very good local Chinese Thai cooking with all sorts of "dead seafood, meat, veg etc etc. There are also a few live-seafood stalls but we focus on value for money and good taste rather than the up-market "live-seafood" variety.

The market is downstairs and the foodstalls are upstairs and a lot of Chulalongkorn University Students go there to eat simple "western dishes" too! Mostly girls and guys in small groups and couples and of course if you are lucky, small groups of girls. Never know what fish you find in this place!

HEALTH RISK. do you dare to take up the challenge? :D

Road conditions drive seafood restaurants out of business

Dreadful road conditions around the Bang Khunthian-Chai Thalay road are driving seafood restaurants and other shops in the area commonly known as the ''Sea of Bangkok'' out of business.

Located on the Thon Buri side of the river, and only an hour's drive from downtown Bangkok, Bang Khunthian district used to be a hot destination for seafood lovers, where you could buy fresh seafood at reasonable prices.

A guided boat tour to explore local mangroves and wildlife through a network of canals that open into the Gulf of Thailand has also been quiet in recent months.

Since last year, a large number of seafood restaurants have closed down, along with outlets selling fresh seafood.

Road construction is underway, and soil-laden trucks travel back and forth to housing estate construction sites, pitting the road with holes and filling the air with dust and noise.

Many developers are hoping to tap into expected future demand in the area after the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) launched a 700-million-baht project to renovate the 11.5km road connecting Rama II road and Khlong Tapae bridge.

But for now, the road is dotted with large craters and covered in dust.

''I feel sorry for the students. They have to hold on to their seats when they take a songthaew to school. It is worse for pillion-riding students when motorcycle riders zigzag to avoid the holes in the road,'' said a sweet vendor who gave her name only as Somwang.

''They arrive at schools with red hair and covered in dust.''

Suchart Chai-arun, former chief of the Sriguman community, said: ''The road is bumpy even when it's not yet rainy season. There are only trucks travelling. Other types of vehicles are rarely seen.''

Manas Sakthong, manager of the Ao Kraban Seafood restaurant, said daily takings had dropped from 200,000 to 50,000 baht.

Only regular clients braved the bumpy road to eat there, because others fear the road will ruin their cars, he said.

''My complaint submitted to Governor Apirak [Kosayodhin] went unheeded. The district office passed my complaint to the contractors. It all comes down to the public to bear the brunt,'' said Mr Manas.

Another store owner, who gave his name only as Pai and runs one of the remaining five seafood outlets, admitted his seafood selection has shrunk as the poor state of the road is keeping customers away.

A BMA source said the road project, which started in January, is due to be completed in 720 days.

The second phrase of the project, stretching 3.5km from Khlong Tapae bridge to Khlong Pittayalongkorn school, will be put up for auction this month.

''The livelihoods of the public should improve after the road project is completed. There will be no more floods in the rainy season.'' the source said.

My Simple Bangkok Trip 28th -30th July 2008

I arrived in the new airport as I didn’t go to Bangkok for the last 2 years already and the new airport is nice.

We were pick up by our supplier in the airport and sent to their office and discuss business and ding dong ding dong it is around 5 pm and after that we went for a late lunch, I almost die of starvation……damn hungry.

After late lunch,check in into the good old hotel The Emerald Hotel in Rachadapisek area that I use to patronize until today as it is a strategic location all the fun place and at one time the Spark Disco at the basement of The Emerald Hotel is THE place for FL for Jap, Hong Kies, Singaporean and of course Malaysia Chinese. So that is how I get it to be my company panel of hotels to achieve corporate price.


• 6.00pm - Check in hotel and have a quick shower as the 32 degrees heat in Bangkok made my manly smell all over me.
• 7.00pm – Made some call to my friend’s friend and she arrived with 4 girls (ex-pent-house) excluding herself – damage dunno didn’t ask as not interested
• 7.30pm - After some coffee and chit chat, went for dinner and I am still full from the late lunch….talk cock and polish up my rusty Thai.

Yes, it is still there and exist though out the years and it is call Galaxy and all taxi will be able to bring you there. Galaxy is the complex and the restaurent is called Hand-free restaurant. yes, there are few sgrean in our group. We normally go by car or by bus. Never take flight to Hatyai before.

Damage actually depend on person. If you only go for farm gal and don't drink much in disco and hang flower. Probably rm500 per day is more enough. If you wanna fish gal in club and hang alot flower and drink alot liquor. Rm1000 per day maybe not enough.

I love the steam crabs on the road side.... and the enjoy the bedroom scene soberly......

try the thai beef meat n meatball soup and the chrispy chicken at roadside stall opp. Robinson jus beside the petrol kiosk or in the morning you can try the small food market jus before Robinson serving many food including chicken rice but not from Singapore thou :p


if ur hungry in middle of nite u can try Ratchda Talay its jus further down Palazzo Hotel...whole stretch of roadside stalls serving food all the way til morning


btw Por Kung Pao at Ratchada is closed down already for those didnt know

we tried Kuang seafood instead, reasonable price given the locailty n types of customers but not my type of seafood place (notice not much thai eating there)
food also so-so Tomyam is not bad but still prefer Ayutthaya's tom yam and their grilled King Prawn cannot make it (pretty expensive too 500baht/kilo compared to Ayutthaya at only abt 180~320baht - size varies but i find 220baht/kilo is almost similar size as Kuang's)

Well...I have to admit that Danok and Bkk are very different in term of food and gals but there is a no of disco, lot of chicken farms about 20-30 farms where you can take out a girl for rm200-300 for a full day until next morning of which in Bkk it does not exist anymore since 10 years ago. Correct me if I am wrong.

For the club that hang flower, well, we still can take the girls out if we don't want to hang flower if you are a bit leng chai and some $$$ to give to the girl directly (nego) but not every dancer will do it.

Recently, went there and found the original stall already closed, taken over by
a new food stall. Further down about three shops away toward new petchburi road there is a chicken rice stall but not sure whether it's from the original owner (old man).

Regarding the Pratunam chicken rice, it's about the same standard, imo. The good thing about that place, is that it's easier to find seats there after clubbing. The whole of soi 3 will be flooded by the people from soi 4. Also, if still gian after your chicken rice @ Pratunam, can just go down the road to Boss.

if ur hungry in middle of nite u can try Ratchda Talay its jus further down Palazzo Hotel...whole stretch of roadside stalls serving food all the way til morning

The open air ones are not too bad, the price of course cheaper than Somboon etc., but of course the quality not the same standard either. Like compare small restaurant and big restaurant, hehe. The air-con one is just a bit further down, near the shop selling the pig leg rice.

As for the place near the national stadium, it's not near any BTS/MRT station. It's the stadium past Rama 9, towards Ramkamhaeng area. If you know where Ram Uni is, that's the stadium. There are 2 roads on each side of the stadium. One is Ramkamhaeng, the other is known as 'Lung (L)Ram'. The hotel and the restaurant is on Lung Lam. (Lung as in 'behind'.) They're in the Hua Mak area.

As far as I know/can see, they don't have an actual name. It's in a little tent with those makeshift metal tables/chairs. Not open during the day, only in the evenings/at night. Think it closes around 11pm. If going by taxi, just tell them to get you to hotel Inter Place @ Hua Mak/Ramkamhaeng.

It's somewhat opposite J-Avenue. The chicken rice is ok lah; they try to rip off the Boon Tong Kee thing with a misspelled name. They also have 'Singapore Fried Rice', that you see all over the world, but not actually in Singapore. :p

Their hokkien mee is unfortunately so-so also. It's fine in a pinch when desperate, but sadly can't touch ours back home. :( They also have mee goreng etc.

If anyone is interested, there is a muu ka ta just further up that road, towards Sutthisarn with separate hot coal brazier for seafood. They interestingly also have Tiger beer.

Further down towards Meng Zai, there is an excellent porridge/cai peng place that's open until 3+am, at the head of the soi. It's just after the overhead bridge, and pretty brightly lit, so you can't miss it.

Yup, that's the one. Never tried the steak, always get fish and chips while gf gets the bangers and mash. Very large portions. :p Also nice and quiet, good to get away from the noise and the hustle and bustle in the area.
